Point-Counterpoint

Two of my friends and fellow columnists, Billy Joe Mills and Brian Pierce, are featured in a Point-Counterpoint today in the Daily Illini.

Both Billy Joe and Brian have posted the debate on their blogs.

I see you are still writing. Not your last column even though your friends are suspended from their jobs?

Josh, who actually has the power to fire them, so I can be upset with the correct people?

I mean, hell, if they're fired, the DI will never get another cent of subscription money from me!!!

Oh.....never mind.

Tom- i'm not really sure, probably either the publisher or the board of the illini media company, maybe one or the other, maybe both.

Josh, do you mean to tell me that the DI (the bastion of free speech and scholarly discussion) has suspended your buddies for printing those stupid cartoons? You have to be kidding me! That makes me want to puke. Talk about political caving! Publishing those cartoons so that everyone could read and understand the truth about the issue took courage and is what student newspapers are supposed to be about. I suspect the real problem is that when people see how harmless the cartoons are then it will make the violence and outrage seem all the more childish and uncivilized. (as if that is possible) I mean, I almost burned an embassy once cause Snoopy shot down the Red Barron and I thought that mocked my German heritage, but after days of ranting and raving in the streets I got over it!

You see, you and your friends are so passionate about the first amendment, and you should be, but you still haven’t made the connection that without the second amendment the first amendment will blow away like smoke on a windy day. You think about it.

By the way, I got my annual bonus today and got socked over 7K in taxes! Any of you whine-ass liberals want to bitch about President Bush’s “egregious tax cuts, let me just be the first to say kiss my over-taxed Republican butt! If you want to feed the world have a ball, I would rather add to my portfolio!

Anyway, if they fire your buddies take the walk with them. Long after that job is a memory you will still be looking at your reflection in the mirror. Once you give away your personal integrity, you will hate the guy looking back at you.

I've been thinking about this - my friends keep telling me that I shouldnt quit if they're fired over some process reason which has nothing to do with the speech issue.

I'm convinced that's a pretense, while they didnt handle themselves ideally, it doesn't rise to a firable offense. I'll miss writing the column, but it's not really a sacrifice if I wouldnt. You're right, when they are fired I'm going to stop being a regular columnist.

I'll continue while they are on suspension, and from time to time I might write a guest column if there is some pressing issue, but I'll give up my spot as a weekly columnist. You're right.
